Abstract: The paper examines Simplicius' subtle subversion of authority in his elaborate commentaries on Aristotle (ca. 530 AD) on the basis of several case studies (Plotinus, Alexander of Aphrodisias, Damascius) which illustrate explicit and explicit disagreements in the late Patonic tradition.
