Vers une histoire du fouriérisme à l'île Maurice

Abstract

Raymond d’Unienville’s study of the Fourierist press campaign that was conducted in Mauritius between 1846 and 1851 provides us with a rich and hitherto unpublished local source of documentation. However, in spite of the significance of this episode, which the author describes in minute detail, much remains to be said about Fourierism in Mauritius and its place in the history of Fourierism itself. For example, the study neglects to discuss an experimental phalanstery which was created in Mauritius well before the episode in question and which reveals a close link between Désiré Laverdant and Evenor Dupont, the leader of the 1846-1851 campaign. This leads us to conclude that there is scope for a wider study on the Mauritian Fourierists, their links with the École Sociétaire, and the importance of Fourierism in the turbulent social history of the island. = Par son étude sur la campagne fouriériste menée dans la presse mauricienne entre 1846 et 1851, Raymond d’Unienville nous fait accéder à une documentation locale inédite et très riche. Et pourtant, malgré l’importance de cet épisode, que l’auteur décrit avec minutie, tout n’est pas dit sur le fouriérisme mauricien ou sur sa place dans l’histoire du fouriérisme. On passe par exemple sous silence un projet de phalanstère à Maurice qui est bien antérieur à cet épisode et qui lie intimement Désiré Laverdant, l’auteur du projet, à Evenor Dupont, le chef de la campagne de 1846-1851. D’où la nécessité d’ouvrir un chantier plus vaste sur les militants mauriciens, leurs rapports avec l’École Sociétaire et l’importance du fouriérisme dans l’histoire sociale mouvementée de l’île Maurice.
