Abstract: This article provides a summary of the 'Manufacturing into the Future' presentation during the AusBiotech 2013 'Bio-economy in transition' Plenary Session. The presentation has three key parts. The first is a review of why manufacturing matters to an economy. The second a review of the historical development of the structure of manufacturing with some comments on the likely future development of this structure. The third covers the role of biotechnology in the manufacturing of the future.
