Abstract: Fluoride phosphate glasses have been studied as an alternative glass material to lead silicate for fabricating optical fibres for sensing applications. Fibres are studied in a situation where the core region is exposed to the environment during fabrication, similar to the fabrication of microstructured optical fibres. Transmission and photo-darkening properties of both glasses are presented, followed by the fabrication conditions used to improve the quality of fluoride phosphate optical fibres. © 2011 IEEE.
