Abstract: | This chapbook stems from Shapcott's dissatisfaction with a poor English translation of Stefan George's work of the same name. In 1908 the German composer and musical theorist Arnold Schoenberg used Stefan's poetry as part of a song cycle, Das Buch der Hangenden Garten. Finding the subsequent English lyric wanting, Shapcott has produced a better version, with detailed notes on the process. |
