Abstract: The story is set in a small Australian city where there are strong undercurrents of religious and racial discrimination. Rosanna, the protagonist, narrates her life through fragments of memory, drawing upon her experience as a child and young woman in Australia and Japan. Her understanding of home is a major theme in the novel.
