Drink-driving in South Australia: the women's experience

Abstract

Drink-driving and involvement in alcohol-related crashes have long been considered a male domain. However, recent changes in women's drinking patterns, emanating at least in part from changes in the role of women in society, have highlighted the need to reassess womens' involvement in drinking and driving. This paper examines, first, the changes over time in factors related to women's potential exposure to driving and drink-driving, and secondly, the extent of drinking and driving in the general population of male and female drivers, as well as among those admitted to hospital and those fatally injured.
