Easyweb Access Presentation and Browser Capabilities to Support Small Screen Devices

Abstract

This thesis documents research and development leading to a major contribution to the screen-phone industry, one that will significantly increase the ability of vendors to introduce new end-user services in an efficient and timely manner. The work focuses on developing solutions to problems that had made new (ADSI-based) service development costly, time and training intensive, service specific and therefore, a bottleneck to the growth of screen-phones as an access device for the burgeoning network-services industry. This thesis examines a bookshop service and uses it as the basis for developing the ADSI Presentation Language (APL). It also describes the evolution of APL and its associated browser into the commercial grade language and browser: the Easy Web Markup Language (EWML) and the E-Z Explorer. Finally, it discusses their successful deployment in the United Kingdom. Some of the work \Mas done in collaboration with Global ADSI Solutions, Inc. (GLADSIS). GLADSIS also provided the resources for the refinement of the research being addressed in this thesis. They also provided the author possible approaches to develop, implement and test her solutions.
