Abstract: Rachel Caines examines the data on Indigenous enlistment in the Australian Imperial Force of WWI and the impact of discriminatory policies. Caines was awarded the 2019 Hugh Martin Weir Prize for her research on how Aboriginal Australian, Torres Strait Islander, and Māori soldiers have been incorporated, or excluded, from the dominant narratives of the First World War.
